San Francisco Sidewalks

while walking around san francisco, I am captivated by the diversity of 'scenes' I find just by looking down.

the layering of stencils and engravings from other artists, paint drippings from various clean-up or graffiti projects, oil stains, cracks in the pavement, the ubiquitous gum wads, even the seams between the sidewalk slabs works to express the stories of the people who live here.

when I began to assemble the individual images into grids, I was trying to emulate the pattern of the sidewalks from which they were taken.

but as the number of individuals per grid increased, I started to see a resemblance to the density of renters in central san francisco.

the final number of images in the grid are my attempt at visually expressing a vacancy rate somewhere between zero and one percent.

what started as a documentation of urban sidewalk artifacts has evolved into an exploration of topics like urban planning, gentrification, group dynamics...
